Unit 9: Genetic monitoring Flashcards
What can genetic identification be applied in
-Species identification
- Identification of individuals or matching tissue samples
- Identifying population of origin
- Identifying relatedness or parentage of individuals
What is species identification
-Identifying species of origin of tissue or biological products
- This can be used in cases of poaching or other crimes
- It can also be used in testing the species origin of sold processed meat
The example where species identification was used in the department
-A study was conducted in the department where blood collected from a blesbok carcass was smeared on knives and left at room temperature.
- DNA was collected from the knives
– Once a week
– Every second day for 2 weeks
– Once a week for 4 weeks
-Cytochrome C oxidase was used
- The results was that the samples were still identifiable up until 52 days old
An example of identifying relatedness or parentage of individuals
Determining the parentage of animals claimed to be born in legal captive breeding facilities
i.e parrots
This is also used for effective management in populations
