Unit 8.1 Digestion (Lipids) Flashcards
What are two characteristics of lipids?
store 2x the amount of energy than carbs
non-polar (insoluble in water)
What are lipids made of?
glycerol
3 fatty acids
What vitamins do lipids carry?
A, D, E, K
What are two functions of lipids?
Cushioning organs
Making hormones
What do lipids do in the cell membrane?
act as a phospholipid bilayer (provides structure)
What are the four types of lipids?
Triglycerides (fat)
Waxes
Phospholipids
Steriods
What are triglycerides and what are the two types?
triglycerides are fat (lipid)
there’s unsaturated and saturated
What is the difference between saturated and UNsaturated?
saturated = solid @ room temp (animal fats, unhealthy for heart) unsaturated = liquid @ room temp (plant oils)
Waxes act as a…
waterproof coating (for plant leaves, bird feathers, etc)
What are steroids made of and what are the two types?
made of cholesterol
HDL
LDL
What is the difference between HDL & LDL?
HDL = removes bad cholesterol, protects against heart attack/stroke LDL = blocks arteries, can cause heart attack/stroke
What are liposomes and why are they used?
Synthetic membranes used to safely deliver drugs, they are used because they reduce unwanted side effects
