Unit 8 : Renewable Energy Flashcards
Why do we need energy sources?
We need energy sources for our cars, trains, planes, machines, appliances, and many other energy-consuming vehicles and devices.
What are the examples of fossil fuels and what are they used for?
The examples of fossil fuels are coal, oil and gas, and they are used for our cars, trains, planes, machines, appliances, and many other energy-consuming vehicles and devices.
How is the CO2 in the atm increasing?
CO2 in the atm is increasing dramatically.
Why is it essential for us to use renewable energy instead of burning fossil fuels?
Because the earth is running out of fossil fuels, which means that there is a need for alternative sources of energy for use on a wide scale.
What does renewable energy refer to?
Renewable energy refers to energy that is produced using the sun, wind, water, etc. (rather than using fuels such as oil, gas and coal).
What are the rich sources of renewable energy?
The rich sources of renewable energy are sun, wind, water, waste and heat.
What are the two benefits of using renewable energy?
- are that these energy sources can never run out or are inexhaustible and they can be produced without causing CO2 emissions, air pollution and global warming.
What are the drawbacks of using hydropower?
- are that water-powered tubines can have a negative effect on aquatic wildlife, building hydropower dams can cause the land behind the dams to flood and the costs of installing hydropower systems are high.
3 drawbacks
How is the process of creating wind power different from that of hydropower?
- by the process of creating wind power being relatively cheap and considered one of the most affordable forms of energy today.
How is electricity generated from the sun?
- when sunlight hits the photovoltaic cells on specially designed panels.
What are the benefits of using solar energy for the environment?
- are that it helps control air pollution, it causes no noise and sunlight is a renewable source that can never get used up.
3 benefits
How long does it take to form fossil fuels?
It takes hundreds of millions of years to form fossil fuels.
What is biomass?
Biomass is a biologically produced fuel made from dead plant and animal materials.
What are the examples of renewable energy sources?
- hydropower, wind power, solar energy, biomass energy and geothermal energy.
Where can the most active geothermal resources be found?
- can be found in areas near volcanoes.
What are the advantages of using wind turbines?
- are that the process is relatively cheap and is also considered one of the most affordable forms of energy today and it doesn’t have harmful effects on the air and land it uses.
