Manifest Destiny
a belief that Americans had the right and duty to spread across the continent all the way to the Pacific Ocean (sea to shining sea)
Northwest Ordinance
1787, set up a way for territories to become states; also guaranteed basic rights to settlers and outlawed slavery in the territories
Popular Sovereignty
one of the 7 basic principles of the Constitution that the people have the right to create, alter, and abolish their government
Westward Expansion
the movement of people to settle the western U.S.
Republic
system of government in which citizens choose representatives to govern them
Settlement Patterns
the way people distribute themselves in their environment, including where they locate their dwellings, how they group dwellings into settlements, and how permanent or transitory those settlements are
Annexation
to take over territory and incorporate it into another country or state
