Unit 8 Flashcards
Water testing
BOD
Biological Oxygen demand
Amount of dissolved oxygen required to break down the organic material in a given volume of water through aerobic biological activity by microorganisms
Water testing
Where do we do BOD test
Feedlots and Septic field
DO facts
- more oxygen = less DO
- Cold water holds more DO
- Tempatures rise/ DO decreases
- Higher altitude= less oxygen
Sewage system
1
Influent Pump
Using gravity a pump bring water to sewage plant
sewage system
2
Preliminarty Treament/ Headwords
Flows thorugh a screen to get rid of physical things and then a grit removal system to get sand/gravel
Sewage system
3
Primary treatment
Uses Primary clarifer removes other PM adn leftover solids (sludge) that sink to the bottom and a skimmer removes floating algae
- biosoilds are removed and used in landfills or fertilizers
60% good
some countries stop here
Sewage System
4
Secondary treatment
bacteria break down stuff into organic matter into CO2 and inorganic sludge
- Trickling Filter bacteria consumes organic matter and clean water goes through pipes
- Sent to aeration basin for Activated Sludge Process which blows air to help bacteria to consume and break down the harmless byproduct
90% effective
Sewage System
5
Tertiary treatment
Chemicals or ecological process are used to remove pollutants
- removes nuterients (Nitrogen and Phosphorus)
Sewage System
6
Disinfection
use oxidant chemicals (like chlorine, ozone, or UV light) to kill bacteria & viruses
