Unit 8 Flashcards
Korean War
Which country was Korea annexed from?
They were annexed from Japan
Which country was interested in Korea? How did they handle Korea’s annexation?
Russia was interested in Korea and entered the northern-east part of Korea in 1945. With the approval of other countries at Teheran, Russia made a trusteeship with North Korea
Why did the U.S enter South Korea and create the 38th parallel (S.K and N.K split)?
They didn’t want Soviet communisum to spread
What is the People’s Committee?
It was established in Korea as a group that would distribute nessecities and also occupy some of Japan’s industries but the USA quickly became suspicious of them and removed them from all gov’t positions
Who were the new leaders of both Koreas?
Kim II Sung (N.K) & Syngman Rhee (S.K). Rhee was very hard to work with and brutal towards the US and the citizens but they needed him to stop communisum from spreading further. These choices in new leaders caused many uprisings to happen within the countries and both the US and USSR wanted to avoid any civil war
What was the USA and USSR’s responses to the riots in Korea?
Stalin proposed that the US and the USSR withdraw from the but Truman didn’t support it. And although the UN made temporary commission for South Koreans to choose their own gov’t because the USSR wouldn’t let them do it in N.K. Stalin withdrew his forces earlier than Truman but maintained good relations with N.K
What did North Korea want after Stalin left?
A unified communist Korea (they still needed the USSR’s military and financal help to proceed though)
Why was Stalin unwilling to support North Korea’s plan to dominate all of Korea?
Because he knew where the US stood on this certain situation and didn’t want to start any trouble because they weren’t prepared for an kind of war yet
Why does South Korea need the U.S help?
Because Rhee wanted to dominate Korea with his own ideology but USA was unwilling in fear of going to war with USSR
What is the NSC 68?
It was issued by the U.S which argued for a large stockpile of weapons and expansion of forces
What did Acheson do?
He gave the Pacific Perimeter Speech and said this defense perimeter included the Aleutain Islands in Alaska, the Phillipians, Japan, and Okinawa (didn’t include Korea)
Who did Kim Sung II turn to for help (not N.K)?
He turned to Mao in China who agreed with Kim that military action was the only way to unite the two Koreas
Why was the USSR eventually okay with helping N.K’s military plans for taking over S.K?
Because the USA withdrew from S.K and without them, Stalin wouldn’t have to worry about the USA intervening when N.K tried to take over S.K (N.K does succeed in taking over S.K)
Who did the U.S turn to for help?
They turned to the U.N who was only able to take military action because the USSR was boycotting them for not recognizing China’s communist gov’t. American troops, as well as troops from other countries protected S.K and the UN even pulled out surprise attacks
What happened at the Yalu River?
The UN chased N.K till the Yalu River (Korean border with China) then they crossed that border and defeated them but Chinese volunteers crossed the rivers and counter-attacked the US forces. China wanted to ask the USSR for help but they in turn suggested that China’s army should help the N.K instead and although Mao disagreed, he helped anyways
