A

Russia was interested in Korea and entered the northern-east part of Korea in 1945. With the approval of other countries at Teheran, Russia made a trusteeship with North Korea

What is the People’s Committee?

A

It was established in Korea as a group that would distribute nessecities and also occupy some of Japan’s industries but the USA quickly became suspicious of them and removed them from all gov’t positions

Who were the new leaders of both Koreas?

A

Kim II Sung (N.K) & Syngman Rhee (S.K). Rhee was very hard to work with and brutal towards the US and the citizens but they needed him to stop communisum from spreading further. These choices in new leaders caused many uprisings to happen within the countries and both the US and USSR wanted to avoid any civil war

What was the USA and USSR’s responses to the riots in Korea?

A

Stalin proposed that the US and the USSR withdraw from the but Truman didn’t support it. And although the UN made temporary commission for South Koreans to choose their own gov’t because the USSR wouldn’t let them do it in N.K. Stalin withdrew his forces earlier than Truman but maintained good relations with N.K

A

A unified communist Korea (they still needed the USSR’s military and financal help to proceed though)

Why was Stalin unwilling to support North Korea’s plan to dominate all of Korea?

A

Because he knew where the US stood on this certain situation and didn’t want to start any trouble because they weren’t prepared for an kind of war yet

A

A

A

He gave the Pacific Perimeter Speech and said this defense perimeter included the Aleutain Islands in Alaska, the Phillipians, Japan, and Okinawa (didn’t include Korea)

A

He turned to Mao in China who agreed with Kim that military action was the only way to unite the two Koreas

Why was the USSR eventually okay with helping N.K’s military plans for taking over S.K?

A

Because the USA withdrew from S.K and without them, Stalin wouldn’t have to worry about the USA intervening when N.K tried to take over S.K (N.K does succeed in taking over S.K)

Who did the U.S turn to for help?

A

They turned to the U.N who was only able to take military action because the USSR was boycotting them for not recognizing China’s communist gov’t. American troops, as well as troops from other countries protected S.K and the UN even pulled out surprise attacks

What happened at the Yalu River?

A

The UN chased N.K till the Yalu River (Korean border with China) then they crossed that border and defeated them but Chinese volunteers crossed the rivers and counter-attacked the US forces. China wanted to ask the USSR for help but they in turn suggested that China’s army should help the N.K instead and although Mao disagreed, he helped anyways

A

A bigger number of people but the U.N was more technologically advanced

What paused the conflict between the US and China (along with N.K)?

A

The US and UN called for a ceasefire to disscus terms for ending this completely. USSR wasn’t always present for these meetings but refused to accept communist defeat. After Stalin’s death though these desisions never bothered the USSR because they lost interest in Korea but the damage was already done

A

The PCR, N.K, and the UN signed a ceasefire and agreed to the division of Korea near its pre-war borders

A

North and South Korea were permenantly split and were very against each other

A

The US still kept troops in South Korea and expanded the Acheson perimeter. After this war, the US was sure that communists would try to spread even more so they took many actions to prevent itW
