Q

What are structural isomers?

A

Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula

Ex. C6H14 can be known as:

  • Hexane
  • 2-methylpentane
  • 3-methylpentane
  • 2, 2-dimethylbutane
  • 2, 3-dimethylbutane

Q

What must be remembered with Alkenes/alkynes?

A
  • longest chain with a triple or double bond will act as parent chain
  • indicate location of double/triple bond in name
  • carbons are counted starting at the end closest to the double/triple bond

Q

What are Geometric isomers?

A

Alkenes can have same structure but diff. orientation across a double bond or a cycloalkane

  • cis = Hydrogens in same side of double bond
  • Trans = Hydrogens in diff. side of double bond

Q

What is Addition?

A

When an unsaturated organic compound becomes saturated by the addition of an atom or group of atoms

Ex. Halogenation:
• Ethene + Cl2 -> 1, 2 dichloroethane

*removes double and triple bonds
