Unit 7 - Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are the most elements found in organic compounds?
“CHONPS”
What are the different types of Hydrocarbons?
- Alkanes - no double or triple bonds between C atoms
- Alkenes- one or more double bonds between C atoms
- Alkynes - one or more triple bonds between C atoms
Which hydrocarbons are UNsaturated?
Alkenes and Alkynes
List the prefixes when naming hydrocarbons.
of C atoms = prefix
1: Meth-
2: Eth-
3: Prop-
4: But-
5: Pent-
6: Hex-
7: Hept-
8: Oct-
9: Non-
10: Dec-
What rules apply when naming cycloalkanes?
Same rules as hydrocarbons except the prefix “cyclo-“ is added
*it has a ring structure
What are structural isomers?
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula
Ex. C6H14 can be known as:
- Hexane
- 2-methylpentane
- 3-methylpentane
- 2, 2-dimethylbutane
- 2, 3-dimethylbutane
What must be remembered with Alkenes/alkynes?
- longest chain with a triple or double bond will act as parent chain
- indicate location of double/triple bond in name
- carbons are counted starting at the end closest to the double/triple bond
What are Geometric isomers?
Alkenes can have same structure but diff. orientation across a double bond or a cycloalkane
- cis = Hydrogens in same side of double bond
- Trans = Hydrogens in diff. side of double bond
What is produced in an incomplete combustion?
Carbon or Carbon Monoxide
What is Substitution?
Replacement of an atom or group of atoms in an organic molecule
What is Addition?
When an unsaturated organic compound becomes saturated by the addition of an atom or group of atoms
Ex. Halogenation:
• Ethene + Cl2 -> 1, 2 dichloroethane
*removes double and triple bonds
What is Elimination?
Forms double or triple bond by removing an atom or groups of atoms
What is Esterification?
Reaction between an organic acid and an alcohol to produce an ester
Ex. Butanoic acid + ethanol -> ethyl butanoate + water
What is Polymerization?
A large molecule composed of many repeating sub-units
Ex. DNA: Nucleotide polymer
Ex. Proteins: Amino Acid polymer
Ex. Polyethylene: Ethylene polymer
