Unit 7: Global Change Flashcards
Uh radiation
Portion of electromagnetic spectrum, most damaging from 280-320nm on wavelength
Ozone depletion
Depletes over polar regions because the cold creates clouds of ice crystals
Montreal protocol
Countries participating have agreed to stop productions of CFC’s at 1986 levels
Greenhouse effect
Solar radiation penetrates earth it either reflects or absorbed. Reflected radiation 1/3 goes back to space. The absorbed causes thermal motion or conduction
Greenhouse gasses
CO2, methane, water vapor, ozone, and CFC’s
Deforestation
Increases the carbon in the atmosphere
Kyoto protocol
Argument between 150 countries to reduce greenhouse gasses
Clean air act of 1972
Established carbon dioxide as criteria pollutant and set standards for it and other greenhouse gasses
Biodiversity
Refers to the vastly different species on earth; three types: biodiversity, species diversity, ecosystem diversity
Genetic diversity
Variety of different genes in and gene pool of population in single species
Bottleneck effect
Survival of few individuals after a cataclysmic effect
Low genetic diversity
Extinction is on the way
CFC’s
Greatest threat to ozone depletion
What are the major form of greenhouse gasses?
H2O, CO2, CH4, N2O, CFC’s
What are the natural sources of carbon dioxide?
Volcanic eruptions, decomposition, wildfires
