unit 7 cards Flashcards
The smallest unit of life
cell
Specialized subunits of a cell that have specific jobs.
organelles
Cells that do not have a nucleus (bacteria, archaea)
prokaryotes
Cells that do have a nucleus (plants, animals, fungi, protists)
eukaryotes
The fluid inside the cell membrane that contains all organelles.
cytoplasm
Tiny hairs on prokaryotes that help cell move and reproduce.
pill
Round structures where proteins are made
ribosomes
Tail-like structure that aids in mobility
flagellum
Contains the genetic material of the cell as well as the nucleolus.
nucleus
The structure inside the nucleus that manufactures ribosomes, the cell’s protein-producing structures.
nucleolus
The double-layered membrane that encloses the contents of the nucleus during most of the cell’s life cycle.
nuclear envelope
Small holes within the nuclear envelope that regulate the passage of molecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm
nuclear pores
A transport system that extends from the nucleus and Moves materials around the cell. (Can be smooth or rough depending on if it contains ribosomes.)
endoplasmic reticulum
Contains no ribosomes and helps detoxify the cell and create lipids.
smooth ER
Studded with ribosomes…aid in protein production and transport
rough ER
