Unit 7 - Behaviour and Ecology Flashcards
Two steps to show physiology’s role in ringdove productive behavior
- Male begins courting; bowing and cooing
- Testosterone readies male for this behaviour
- Sight of male doing this causes females pituitary gland to produce FSH
- Causes her ovaries to produce eggs and release oestrogen to bloodstream
- Male & female construct a nest and copulate
- Progesterone in both sexes causes birds to incubate the nest
- Prolactin causes crop to grow
One example of innate behaviour
Wolf pups begging for food
chick pecking
Define Biosphere
Thin area surrounding the earth composed of water, land, and air where organisms are found
Four types of treeless biomes
Tundra
Grasslands
Scrublands
Deserts
Define Ecology
Study of the interaction of organisms with each other and with the physical environment
Define Niche
profession or total role in the community (no two species can occupy the same niche at the same time)
Four types of heterotrophic consumers
herbivores
carnivores
omnivores
decomposers
Define Commensalism
One organism is benefitted while the other organism is neither benefited or harmed; ex. barnacles on whales
