The Allied Powers
They are Britain, France, Russia, and the United States. The Allies formed mostly as a defense against the attacks of the Axis Powers. Spread democracy.
The Axis Powers
They were Germany, Italy, and Japan. Wanted to rule the land around their respective countries and defeat communism in Russia.
Communism
to the political philosophy that advocates for common ownership of the means of production and the absence of social or economic classes in society.
Genocide
Acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, national, ethnic, racial, or religious groups.
The Nuremberg Trials
a series of 13 trials that brought Nazi war criminals to justice.
The United Nations
a conglomeration of countries who meet to discuss and act on issues that threaten or undermine human dignity around the world.
International human rights law
protects citizens of any nation that has signed a treaty with another nation; signing these treaties holds nations accountable for implementing domestic policies that protect and preserve the rights of their citizens.
International Criminal Court
hears cases about leaders who have infringed upon the universal human rights of their countrymen.
The Rome Statute
founded the ICC and defined genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and crimes of aggression.
Economic sanctions
refusing to engage in international trade with a country, for example with a trade embargo.
Diplomatic sanctions
Nations can sever diplomatic relationships with lawbreaking companies, for example by ejecting diplomats or closing embassies.
Military sanctions
The United Nations is authorized to use armed force to maintain the peace, calling on the forces of its member nations.

primary goal was to end racial segregation and ensure that all races enjoy the human rights they are entitled to
Atlantic Slave Trade (1525-1866)
As slaves, these Africans were not granted the same rights as full United States citizens. They were deprived of virtually every human right, with the exception of the right to food.
