What is the “vision” when using the 5s’s?
- nothing extra or unneeded
- areas are clearly distinguished
- there is a place for everything and everything is in its place
- a clean workspace where scrape, etc. falls directly into containers
- continual wall to wall cleaning
- everything is recognizable at a glance
- paperwork is simplified and minimal
- waste and abnormalities are easily recognizable
- standards and procedures are easily understood
- zero defects, zero abnormalities

What is the first pillar of the 5s’s?
Sort through and sort out (organization)
-keep what is needed and eliminate what is not needed
What is the Red-tagging strategy?
-a simple and visual method to separate necessary elements from unnecessary ones
What is the second pillar?
Set things in order, set limits, share information (orderliness)
-arranging needed items/inventory so they are easy to see/ find, to use to return
What is the third pillar?
- Shine
- factory cleanliness and inspections
- eliminate dirt, oil, scrap, and foreign matter (part of daily duties)
- cleanliness aids work efficiency, improves safetym improves moral, improves quality
What is the fourth pillar?
Standardize
- is achieved when the previous 3 pillars are implemented and running effectively
- not an activity but a standardized condition at a certain time
what is evidence of standardized work areas?
- clear, shiny aisles
- color coded areas
- slogan, banners
- no WIP
- one-piece flow
- standardized work sheets
What is the 5th pillar?
Sustain
- discipline helps to achieve objectives
- important to maintain the goals
- the key to maintaining the 4s conditions, make it a habit and properly train everyone on procedures
What is a sign stragtegy?
-using signs to make environments clearer and easier to navigate
What is a painting strategy?
a tool in 5s, Set in order, to visually separate environments
- focus on floors and walls
- separates walking areas and paths
- makes material handling easier
- bright colors used
- WIP designated spots painted

- can improve tool and die location in the warehouse
- probability of assembly errors is decreased
