Suburbanization
The growth o cities outside of an urban area
Urbanization
The process by which people live and are employed in a city
Sprawl
The expansion of cities and urban areas into surrounding rural or undeveloped land
Boomburbs
Rapidly growing (Double digits) suburban areas with a population greater than 100,000
Megacity
A city with a population of over 10 million but under 20 million
Metacity
A city with a population over 20 million
Edge city
An urban area with a large suburban, residential, and business area around it.
Exurbs
the small communities lying beyond the suburbs of a city.
Global Cities
An urban center that is a major player in the global economy and is connected to a network of other global cities through economic, cultural, and political linkages
Central place theory
In any given region there can only be one large central city which is surrounded by a series of smaller cities, towns, and hamlets
Multiple nuclei model
a city with multiple nodes that act as regional centers for economic or residential activity within the larger city
Concentric Zone Model
Describes expansion in concentric rings around the CBD
Galactic City Model
The CBD is surrounded by smaller cities that often copy the functions of a CBD
Griffin Ford Model
A Model showing the CBD with a “spine” where the elite and luxurious residential and business areas, surrounded by areas of extreme poverty.
Urban Infill
The expansion of urban buildings onto unused land surrounded by used land (Gap Filling)
Filtering
The process of subdivision of houses and occupancy by successive waves of lower income people
Periphery country
Country with a low standard of living and low industrial productivity
Semi Periphery country
Newly industrialized countries with the median standards of living
Urban hierarchy
A ranking of settlements based on their size and economic functions
Sector model
shows a city with sectors
Smart growth policies
programs with the goal to allow walkability in cities, adding public green space, giving citizens a voice, and making the community safer
New Urbanism
Encouraging Local community development, sustainable growth, and greater pedestrian accessibility.
Greenbelts
Areas around an urban area purposefully left undeveloped to leave room for farmland.
Slow Growth City
A city where planners have put smart growth initiatives in place to decrease growth.
Zoning Ordinances
A law that limits the permitted uses of land and maximum density of development in a community
Invasion and Succession
Process by which new immigrants dominate and take over areas occupied by older occupants.
Suburbanization of business
The movement of businesses to the suburbs to take advantage of the large labor force
Municipality
A city or town with corporate status and local government.
Blockbusting
A process by which real estate agents convince white property owners to sell their houses at low prices because of fear that persons of color will move into the neighborhood
Redlining
A discriminatory real estate process in NA where members of minority groups are prevented in obtaining money by banks to purchase homes or property in white neighborhoods
Gentrification
Urban renewal that leads to the displacement of the occupying demographic
Zones of abandonment
An area where all people have left because they chose a better living area
Brownfield
A property which has the potential to be hazardous waste, pollutant, or contaminant.
Urban Redevelopment
The tearing down and rebuilding, or renovation of an urban district to improve it.
Nodal cities
A city that has arisen in a comparatively short time frame
