Unit 6: Ecology Flashcards
Between the same species
Intraspecific
Fighting over a resource
Competition
Occurs when one organism hunts another organism to consume
Predation
Between different species
Interspecific
Occurs when 1 organism in the relationship benefits without affecting the other one
Commensalism
Occurs when both species in the relationship benefit in some way
Mutualism
Occurs when 1 organism in the relationship benefits while harming the other one
Parasitism
A species that has vital importance to its community; without the keystone species, the community would drastically differ
Keystone Specific
“living together” occurs when 2 different species have a close relationship within a community.
Symbiosis
The entire planet, including the land, ocean, and atmosphere, and all living things.
Biosphere
An organism’s role/job within its habitat
Niche
A group of individuals of a particular species that a particular environment can support.
Carrying Capacity
A collection of different populations living and interacting within an ecosystem
Community
A single organism
Species
A group of ecosystems that share similar climates and organism
Biome
Refers to the number of individuals per unit area
Population Density
Includes the area and its factors where an organism lives
Habitat
Plankton that lives on the water’s surface
Neuston
Eats plants and meat
Omnivore
“Plant-like” plankton
Phytoplankton
Carbon dioxide +water + hydrogen sulfide = oxygen + sugar +sulfur
Chemosynthesis
