Unit 6 - Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Synthesis
A compound is made from simpler materials (A+B –> C)
Decomposition
A compound is broken down to simple compounds, or to elements that make it up (C–> A+B)
Single Replacement
One element that starts out by itself, replaces another element in a compound, kicking it out (A+BC –> B+AC)
Double Replacement
The positive and negative ions in two compound switch places (AB+CD –> AD+CB)
Combustion
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen (sometimes oxygen) combines with oxygen gas to produce CO2 and water
Diatomic Molecules
Hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and all the halogens (BrINClHOF)
Precipitate Reactions
Special types of double replacement reactions in which the products formed may be a solid, referred to as the precipitate
If a substance is soluble…
It is aqueous and dissolves in water
If a substance is insoluble…
It forms a solid precipitate
