Define Drug
- Any chemical substance that has a direct affect on the body and mind. Sometimes both at the same time. it can be used for medical purposes. People sometimes come addicted to drugs
Dealing with Drugs
- individual rights and freedom
- personal harm and social harm
Define Abuse
- When substance us interferes with the well-being of individuals and the societies in which they live
(doesn’t have to be addiction it can be different from abuse)
Drug use around the world (prevalence)
- serious methodological issies- have you ever …?
- have you used… in the last year?
- Government policies differ - health issues or crime issues?
Drug use in Canada
- Drug crisis or very serious problem?
-Alcohol widely used and socially accepted
-opium no longer legal. or readily available - Cocaine in Coca Cola until 1960
=became socially unacceptable
= Replace with caffeine

- Legalized October 17, 2018
- Federal minimum age – 18
- Age 19+ in Ontario
- Ontario Cannabis legalization
Canada’s Opioid Crisis
- National public health crisis
- Overdoses and deaths caused by opioids (powerful pain-relieving drugs)
- Rapid rise in rates
- Involves prescription opioids, and toxic illegal drugs
- Fentanyl - 50-100 timesmore potent than morphine.
Canada’s Opioid Crisis(Who is at risk?)
Anyone who uses drugs including those who:
- are struggling with problematic substance use
- use drugs occasionally in a recreational context
- are trying an illegal drug for the first time
- are not strictly following their health care professionals’ instructions

Targeted public health emergency response and through:
- Prevention
- Treatment
- Harm reduction
- Enforcement
Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act (2017) (new Act)
-if you’re with some and they’re having a reaction or overdose from the drugs and if you call 911 you will not get arrested
-Legal protection granted by the act
=provides some legal protection for people who —experience or witness an overdose and call 9-1-1 for help.
-Protection from:
=Charges for possession of a controlled substance (i.e. drugs) under section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
-Does notprovide legal protection against more serious offences, such as:
=outstanding warrants
=production and trafficking of controlled substances
=all other crimes not outlined within the act
What is drug addiction
- is where drug use is addictive and it makes users unable to stop using because of their dependency for it
What is impatient
- It refers to the treatment of drug users in a hospital which includes them getting medical supervision for them to detoxification
What is outpatient
- It allows individuals to remain in there home and work which is often less expensive
Patient treatment
- The longer a patent stays in treatment, the greater the likelihood of a successful recovery
Deregulation
- is the reduction of government control over certain drugs. For example, Ontario has opened up the sale of wine to private stores
