What is human resource management?

A

The purpose of human resource management is to ensure that a business achieves the maximum benefit from its employees at the minimum cost. The human resources (HR) department needs to make sure that the business has the right number of employees with the right skills, qualifications and qualities.

What are HR objectives?

A

HR objectives help manage the staff successfully. They might include -
1) Matching the workforce to business needs:
They will have to decide the skill level of the workforce and size of the workforce.

2) Helping employees reach their full potential:
HR has to invest in training so workers can improve their productivity, and gives them opportunities for career progression. In certain jobs HR needs to focus on the most talented workers.

3) Supporting employee/employer relations -
These are based on communication and they react to to problems.

A

The culture within the business influences HR objectives.

Other departments within the business influence HR. They give HR the information that they need to predict the workforce.

The amount of funding available within the business.

What are the external factors HR objectives?

A

The general state of the economy (boom or recession) will affect HR activities such as recruitment and training.

All UK businesses are subject to UK and EU employment laws. HR might have to change their objectives to fit in with new legislation.

Current ethical and environment issues can influence HR objectives.

Improvements in technology might mean HR recruit people who can use a certain type of software or machine.
