Unit 6 Flashcards
What pH #’s are acids?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
What two things combined forms salt?
Metals and nonmetals
What pH # is a neutral?
7
What pH #’s are basics?
8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14
How do you find the # of protons by only using the element?
It is the same as the Atomic #
How do you find the # of neutrons by only using the element?
Atomic Mass - Atomic #
How do you find the Atomic Mass by only using the element?
Protons + Neutrons
What does the Atomic # equal to?
Protons OR Neutrons
What do all Groups/Families have in common?
They have similar properties (Same amount of Valence Electrons)
What are four physical properties of metals?
Malleable, Luster, Ductile, and Conductors
What are four properties of nonmetals?
Brittle, Dull, Insulators, Many Colors
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
Mixtures that aren’t uniform (the same; different). (Chex Mix (You get different food items every time you reach in the bag))
What is a Colloid?
A mixture that has particles small enough that the particles don’t settle, yet large enough that they can block out light
Ex. Jell-O, Smoke, and Milk
What is a Suspension?
A mixture with large particles that separate by themselves over time
Ex. Snow globe, and muddy water
What is a solution?
A mixture whose particles are so small, they block light or settle to the bottom
Ex. Kool-Aid, Iced Tea, Lemonade
What is a homogeneous mixture?
Mixtures that spread out evenly
Ex. Pouring a glass of Kool-Aid
Where is a metal located on the Periodic Table?
The left side of the zigzagging line
Where is a metalloid on the Periodic Table?
The zigzagging line
Where is a nonmetal on the Periodic Table?
The right side of the zigzagging line
What column are the Noble Gases in?
The 18th column
What column are Alkali’s in?
The 1st column
What column are the Halogens in?
The 17th column
What are some properties of basics?
Feels Slippery, Bitter, Corrosive, Not Reactive W/ Metals, OH- Ions,
pH > 7
Ex. Soap, Cleaning Products
What are some properties of acids?
Tastes Sour, H+ Ions, Reactive W/ Metals, Conducts Electricity, pH < 7
Ex. Fruits and Juices, Vinegar

What is a Pure Substance?
A substance that has definite physical and chemical properties. They are made up of one type of particle.
What is a Compound?
Something made up of different kinds of atoms chemically combined.
Ex. Water (Hydrogen and Oxygen)
What are Physical Properties?
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed and measured
w/ out changing the identity of the substance
What are some examples of physical properties?
Density, Smell, Volume, Ductility, Malleability, Mass, Luster, Weight, Area, etc.
What are chemical properties?
A substances ability to change into a new substance w/ new and different properties
What is the gravitational pull affected by?
The size of the planet
What is the equation to find density?
You got to LOVE your density:
m
D= —— (Density= Mass➗Volume)
V
What is mass and what is the unit?
The amount of matter in an object
Grams
What is weight and what is the unit?
Measure of the gravitational pull
Newtons
What are the states of matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Plasma
When are particles in motion?
All the time
Does mass change if you go to a different planet?
NO!!
What are two things that don’t depend on sample size?
Melting and Boiling Point
What has to happen to be weightless?
There has to be zero gravity
