What is the role of the executive?
They develop policies and promote legislation.
What is the role of the legislature?
They debate over policies.
What is the role of the judiciary?
They interpret and apply legislation inline with the intent on parliament.
What is the role of a local authority?
They have the legal responsibility to provide a range of services for the areas they are responsible for.
What is statutory services?
They are required by law and are government funded.
What is a non-statutory service?
They are not required by law and only some receive government funding.
Roles of the police force
- Protect life and property
- keep the kings peace
- Maintain public order and safety.
- Enforce the law, and prevent, detect and investigate criminal activities.
- Enforce licensing laws in relation to pubs, clubs and betting shops.
Roles of the armed forces
- Protecting the interests of the UK at home and abroad.
- Carrying out operations in support of anti-terrorist and drug smuggling operations.
- Assisting in humanitarian operations abroad and at home.
Roles of the fire service
- Extinguish fires and protect the life and property when it occurs.
- Minimise damage to property damage arising from firefighting opportunities.
- Promote fire safety
- Rescue people involved in road traffic collisions.
Roles of custodial care
- The punishment or rehabilitation of offenders.
- To protect society from those who break laws.
What is a local authority?
They have a legal responsibility to provide a range of services for the areas that they’re responsible for.
What are some examples of what a local authority does?
- The provision of education at different levels.
- Rubbish collection.
- Social services/care provision
- Environmental protection
What is central government?
They have an overall responsibility in ensuring that the provision of all statutory services is fit for purpose.
What are some examples of what a central government does?
- Taxation policy
- Ensure the integrity and governance of the whole UK
- To participate in international treaties and agreements
