Unit 5 Vocabulary Flashcards
AC Joint
is a joint at the top of the shoulder. It is the junction between the acromion and the clavicle.
Glenoid Fossa
a shallow depression on a bone into which another bone fits to form a joint, especially that on the scapula into which the head of the humerus fits.
AC Seperation
the clavicle (collar bone) separates from the scapula (shoulder blade).
Head of humerus
The upper or proximal extremity of the humerus consists of the bone’s large rounded head joined to the body by a constricted portion called the neck
Acromion Process
is a bony process on the scapula (shoulder blade). Together with the coracoid process it extends laterally over the shoulder joint
Glenoid Labrum
is a fibrocartilaginous structure (not a fibrocartilage as previously thought) rim attached around the margin of the glenoid cavity in the shoulder blade.
Hills Sach
is a cortical depression in the posterolateral head of the humerus. It results from forceful impaction of the humeral head against the anteroinferior glenoid rim when the shoulder is dislocated anteriorly.
Brachial Plexus
is a network of nerves formed by the ventral rami of the lower four cervical nerves and first thoracic nerve . This plexus extends from the spinal cord, through the cervicoaxillary canal in the neck, over the first rib, and into the armpit.
Rotator Cuff
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, keeping the head of your upper arm bone firmly within the shallow socket of the shoulder.
Stinger
also called a burner or nerve pinch injury, is a neurological injury suffered by athletes, mostly in high-contact sports such as ice hockey, rugby, American football, and wrestling.
SC Joint
is formed from the articulation of the medial aspect of the clavicle and the manubrium of the sternum. It is one of four joints that compose the Shoulder Complex.
Biceps Tendon
attach the biceps muscle to bones in your shoulder and in your elbow.
DOMS
Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles several hours to days after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise.
Dynamic Stability
The characteristic of a body, such as an aircraft, rocket, or ship, that causes it, when disturbed from an original state of steady motion in an upright position, to damp the oscillations set up by restoring moments and gradually return to its original state.
Synergistically
synergistic parts work together, they accomplish more than they could alone. Synergetic is often used to describe the effect of drugs working together — where one drug increases the other’s effectiveness.
