What are common types of web pages?
Splash page, Home page, Internal page.
What’s the focus of a home page layout?
Navigation and general site information, sometimes includes “what’s new”.
What is a splash page and why is it not recommended?
A graphic-heavy intro page with an “Enter” link; delays user access to content.
What distinguishes internal page layout?
Focus is on main information with some navigation, clean and uncluttered layout.
What is “Mystery Meat navigation”?
When links aren’t clearly identifiable, making users hunt for them.
Key font guidelines in web design?
Don’t fix font sizes, use few font types, consider user accessibility, and browser defaults.
When should multimedia be used?
Only when it serves a clear purpose — avoid using it just because it’s available. Can cause poor accessibillty and longer laod times
What is usability testing?
Testing how real users interact with a product to identify design issues.
When should usability testing be done?
During development – earlier fixes are easier and cheaper.
Three simple usability testing techniques?
Think Aloud Protocol, Greeked Layout, Steve Krug’s Trunk Test.
What is the “Think Aloud” protocol?
: Users verbalize thoughts while using the product; testers observe and take notes.
What is a “Greeked” layout?
Layout testing using nonsense text to focus purely on visual layout, not content.
What is the purpose of the “Trunk Test”?
To quickly assess if users can identify: Site ID, Page name, Sections, Navigation, Search, and Location (“You are here”).
