Unit 5 - States of Consciousness Flashcards
psychology (old definition)
the description and explanation of states of consciousness
psychoactive drugs
mood and perception altering substances
Car speedometer
Consciousness is like a car speedometer: “It doesn’t make the car go, it just reflects what’s happening.”
Cognition
mental processes
consciousness
our awareness of ourselves and our environment
stream of consciousness
each moment flows into the next moment like a perfect stream
states of consciousness
waking, sleeping, dreaming, and tripping (drugs)
circadian rhythm
the biological clock; regular bodily rhythms (for example, of temperature and wakefulness) that occur on a 24-hour cycle
sleep cycle
90-minute cycle of five distinct sleep stages
suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)
a pair of grain-of-rice-sized, 20,000-cell clusters in the hypothalamus that causes the brain’s pineal gland to decrease its production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin in the morning or increase it in the evening
REM sleep
rapid eye movement sleep; a recurring sleep stage during which vivid dreams commonly occur. Also known as paradoxical sleep, because the muscles are relaxed (except for minor twitches) but other body systems are active
alpha waves
the relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake state
sleep
periodic, natural loss of consciousness - as distinct from unconsciousness resulting from a coma, general anesthesia, or hibernation
hallucinations
false sensory experience, such as seeing something in the abence of an external visual stimulus
stages of sleep
NREM - 1 --> light sleep NREM - 2 --> NREM - 3 --> NREM - 4 --> REM --> dreams
