Unit 5 science vocabulary Flashcards
rotation
Circular movement around an axis
revolution
One object moving around another object
Neap Tide
A tide with the least difference between high and low tide that occurs when the sun and moon pull at right angles to each other .Happens during the 1st and 3rd quarters
Spring Tide
A tide with the greatest difference between high and low tides that happens during the full moon and the new moon. The sun, Earth and moon are in a straight line.
Axis
Imaginary line that passes through the earths center from the North to the South
Tide
The rise and fall of the earths water
New moon
occurs when the earth and the sun at which the point the moon cannot be seen because its lighted half is facing the sun and its dark side faces the earth
waxing crescent
Has a silver light reflected on the right. A phase of the moon coming after a new moon and before the 1st quarter moon that has lit up crescent on the right
1st quarter
Appears to be half full the light is on the right. The moon is only a quarter of the way through its cycle
Waxing Gibbous
Has a lot reflected on the right. A phase of the moon that comes after the 1st quarter moon and before a full moon is lit up from the left to the right except a small bit on the left
Full moon
Has all light reflected. Earth is between the sun and the moon
Waning Gibbous
Lots of light reflected on the left. A phase of the moon that comes after a full moon and before a last quarter moon where all of the moon is lit up except for a small sliver.
3rd quarter
Has 1/2 light reflecting on the left
Waning crescent
A sliver of light reflected on the left
lunar cycle
A sequence of phases of the moon as it revolves around the earth once every 28 days
waxing
Describes phases following a new moon as more of the moons lighted side becomes visible. We are seeing an increasing amount of the lighted side of the moon, the light appears on the right
Waning
Describes phases that occur after a full moon as the visible lighted side of the moon grows smaller we are seeing a decreasing amount of light. The light appears to be on the left.
lunar phases
the different appearances of the moon from earth throughout the month
tidal range
the difference in levels of ocean water at high tide and low tide
