Unit 5 Memory Flashcards
What is memory?
Memory enables us to retain past experiences and use this information in the present, involving three key stages: encoding, storage and retrieval
What are the three stages of memory
Encoding(transforming sensory input into a mental representation, Storage(Maintaining information), and retrieval( accessing stored information)
What is the Three-Store Model of Memory?
it includes three stores:
Sensory store,
Short-Term Store (STM),
Long-Term Store (LTM)
with key processes of attention, rehearsal an retrieval between them
What is the capacity and duration of the sensory Store?
The sensory store holds a large amount of sensory information for a brief time ( up to 0.3 sec)
What is the capacity and duration of STM?
STM temporarily stores about 7 items fro about 30 seconds, and it is susceptible to displacement by new information
What is chunking in relation to STM?
Chunking is the process of grouping information together to improve the capacity of STM
What is the capacity and duration of LTM?
LTM can store vast amount of information indefinitely
What evidence supports the existence of sensory memory?
Sperling’s 1960 study showed that participants could recall more items when cued, demonstrating that sensory memory has high capacity but a brief duration.
How do amnesia patients provide evidence for the separation of STM and LTM?
Amnesia patients often retain STM but lose the ability to form new LTM, while patients had intact LTM but impaired STM, supporting their distinct roles.
What are some critiques of the Three-Store Model?
The model oversimplifies memory processes, treating STM as a uniform gateway to LTM. Modern views include the concept of Working Memory, which integrates incoming information with LTM
