- Contains 20% of all fresh water in the world
Caribbean Sea
- Surrounds the islands of the West Indies
- Popular tourist area
- Mild tropical climate & beautiful waters
Gulf of Mexico
•Body of water bordered by United States to the north, 5 Mexican states to the south, & Cuba to the east
Pacific Ocean
- World’s largest ocean
* Covers the western coast of South America
Panama Canal
- Man-made canal across the isthmus of Panama
* “Shortcut” that allows ships to travel between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans
Andes Mountains
- 4,500 miles along west coast of South America
- 2nd largest mountain range in the world
- Home of the Inca
Sierra Madre Mountains
- Mountain system in Mexico
* contains some of the highest mountains and volcanoes in Latin America
Atacama Desert
- Located in Chile between the Pacific Ocean & the Andes Mountains
- One of the driest places on earth
- Very little rainfall year round
Air Pollution
- Caused by automobile exhaust & factories
* Mexico City is facing this concern because Sierra Madre Mountains trap polluted air
Deforestation
•Environmental concern caused by logging, mining, & farming in Brazil’s Amazon rain forest
Oil Pollution
- Venezuela’s oil production has resulted in toxic wastes, air pollution, & oil spills
- Oil spills have damaged the environment

* An agreement between US, Canada, & Mexico that eliminated trade barriers

- Large empire located in Andes Mountains (now Peru)

- Leader of the Aztec empire when Cortes arrived

•Spanish conquistador who conquered the Incan empire

- Leader of the Incan empire when Pizarro arrived
* Kidnapped and killed by Pizarro’s men

•Exchange of plants, animals, & diseases between Old World (Europe) and New World (Americas)
