Ethnic Enclave
A place with a high concentration of an ethnic group that is distinct from those in surrounding areas.
Ethnicity
The cultural traits of a group of people.
Race
The physical traits of a group of people.
Nationalism
A strong sense of love and pride for ones country.
Nation
Group of individuals sharing a common language, ethnicity, religion, and other cultural attributes
Nation-State
A state whose territory corresponds to that occupied by a particular ethnicity.
Genocide
The intentional, planned killing of an entire ethnic group.
Landlocked state
A state that does not have a direct outlet to the sea.
Ethnic Cleansing
The forced removal of a minority group from a territory.
Balkanization
The fragmentation of a state or region into smaller, often hostile, unites along ethno-linguistic lines.
Multinational State
A state that has more than one nation within its borders.
Multistate Nation
A nation that has a state of its own, but also resides in other states.
Stateless nation
A nation that has a history of self-determination but does not have a recognized state.
Autonomous Region
A geographic area that is located within a state and has a high degree of autonomy from the state.
Semi-Autonomous Region
A geographic area that is controlled by another state, but only has a moderate degree of self governance.
City-State
A sovereign state with political and economic control over the surrounding countryside.
Colonialism
The practice of acquiring territories and settling there to exert political, economic, and social control over the area.
Imperialism
The idea of growing a state or empire by exerting force over other nations to gain economic and political power without establishing settlements.
