Unit 5 and 6 Biology Vocab Flashcards
the number of organisms within a species in a specific location
Population Density
the proportionate numbers of people in different age categories in a given population for a defined time
Age Structure
an animal that establishes a home in a habitat that is ideal for them
Immigration
an animal that leaves its home to find a more suitable environment
Emigration
growth whose rate becomes even more rapid in proportion to the growing total number or size
Exponential Growth
population expansion decreases as resources become scarce
Logistic Growth
the number of people, organisms, or crops that a region can support
Carrying Capacity
anything that constrains a population’s size and slows or stops it from growing
Limiting Factor
factors that affect the growth rate of a population differently depending on how dense the population already is
Density-Dependent Limiting Factor
any force that effect the size of a population of living things regardless of the density of the population
Density-Independent Limiting Factor
the cultivation or growth of a single crop or organism especially on agricultural or forest land
Monoculture
an energy source that cannot be depleted and are able to supply a continuous source of clean energy
Renewable Resource
a substance that is used up more quickly than it can replace itself
Nonrenewable Resource
development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
Sustainable Development
the process by which vegetation in dry lands decreases and eventually disappears
Desertification
the action of clearing a wide area of trees
Deforestation
a substance that pollutes something, especially water or the atmosphere
Pollutant
the process of accumulation of certain chemicals in living organisms to a concentration higher than that occurring in the inorganic, non-living environment
Biological Magnification
fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants
Smog
rainfall polluted by the atmosphere that causes environmental harm, typically to forest and lakes
Acid Rain
the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem
Biodiversity
the study of different ecosystems in a certain location
Ecosystem Diversity
the number of different species in a particular area and their relative abundance
Species Diversity
the range of different inherited traits within a species
Genetic Diversity
a process during which a large expanse of habitat is transformed into a number of smaller patches
Habitat Fragmentation
regions that contain a high level of species diversity
Ecological Hot Spot
the impact of a person or community on the environment
Ecological Footprint
a layer in the earth’s atmosphere that absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun
Ozone Layer
the study of aquatic animals or the cultivation of aquatic plants for food
Aquaculture
the long-term warming of the planet’s overall temperature
Global Warming
