unit 5 Flashcards
AC joint
the top of the shoulder. It is the junction between the acromion (part of the scapula that forms the highest point of the shoulder) and the clavicle.
Glenoid fossa
a shallow depression on a bone into which another bone fits to form a joint, especially that on the scapula into which the head of the humerus fits.
AC separation
a very frequent injury among physically active people. In this injury the clavicle (collar bone) separates from the scapula (shoulder blade). It is commonly caused by a fall directly on the “point” of the shoulder or a direct blow received in a contact sport.
head of the humerus
The upper or proximal extremity of the humerus consists of the bone’s large rounded head joined to the body by a constricted portion called the neck, and two eminences, the greater and lesser tubercles.
Acromion process
Together with the coracoid process it extends laterally over the shoulder joint. … It articulates with the clavicle (collar bone) to form the acromioclavicular joint.
Glenoid Labrum
The glenoid labrum (glenoid ligament) is a fibrocartilaginous structure (not a fibrocartilage as previously thought) rim attached around the margin of the glenoid cavity in the shoulder blade. The shoulder joint is considered a ball and socket joint
hillis-sach
Specialty. Orthopedics. A Hill–Sachs lesion, or Hill–Sachs fracture, is a cortical depression in the posterolateral head of the humerus. It results from forceful impaction of the humeral head against the anteroinferior glenoid rim when the shoulder is dislocated anteriorly.
brachial plexus
a network of nerves formed by the ventral rami of the lower four cervical nerves and first thoracic nerve
Rotator Cuff
a network of nerves formed by the ventral rami of the lower four cervical nerves and first thoracic nerve
stinger
burner or nerve pinch injury, is a neurological injury suffered by athletes, mostly in high-contact sports such as ice hockey, rugby, American football, and wrestling.
sc joint
ormed from the articulation of the medial aspect of the clavicle and the manubrium of the sternum. It is one of four joints that compose the Shoulder Complex.
Biceps Tendon
an inflammation or irritation of the upper biceps tendon. Also called the long head of the biceps tendon, this strong, cord-like structure connects the biceps muscle to the bones in the shoulder. Pain in the front of the shoulder and weakness are common symptoms of biceps tendinitis.
DOMS
Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles several hours to days after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise. The soreness is felt most strongly 24 to 72 hours after the exercise.
dynamic stability
The characteristic of a body, such as an aircraft, rocket, or ship, that causes it, when disturbed from an original state of steady motion in an upright position, to damp the oscillations set up by restoring moments and gradually return to its original state.
Synergistically
When synergistic parts work together, they accomplish more than they could alone. Synergetic is often used to describe the effect of drugs working together — where one drug increases the other’s effectiveness.
