Unit 5 + 6 Flashcards
Name 2 examples of General Revelation
Creation; the Human Mind
Name 2 examples of Special Revelation
The Bible; the Incarnation of Jesus
Define Inerrant:
Scripture, in it’s original manuscripts, contains no errors (nothing contrary to fact)
Inspiration comes through the supernatural influence of
Holy Spirit.
What was the main criteria for a text to be canonized?
Authenticated Apostolic Authorship
Verbal/Plenary
views of inspiration
Both the words and ideas of scripture are inspired by God so that God partners with the human authors to record His word in all the various parts, and the bible in its entirety
Mystical/Illumination
views of inspiration
it is not the writings that are inspired, but the writers themselves. God inspired individuals, and while inspired could potentially write scripture
Partial
views of inspiration
pieces of the bible are inspired, primarily those related to faith and practice. but other areas may be an error, especially those parts related to science, history, chronology, or other matters that do not affect issues of the faith
Mechanical/Dictation
views of inspiration
God dictated the words of scripture to the authors, who mechanically recorded them in a passive manner, much as a secretary might only write the words they were told to write.
The Bible is….
one unified
story: God’s relentless
pursuit of Prodigal People
General Revelation:
Given to all people in all places throughout all of history.
Special Revelation:
God’s direct communication to humanity, such as through the Bible, Jesus Christ, or divine visions.
General Revelation is important because:
It displays God’s goodness and grace.
It is evidence for God’s existence.
It shows us that God wants to be known!
It is grounds for condemnation for those who reject God.
inspiration
those chosen by the Holy Spirit to write or speak on behalf of God are given guidance that makes their words trustworthy and important.
Degrees of Inspiration:
Certain portions of the Bible are
more inspired than other portions;
Intuition or Natural:
views of inspiration
Not supernatural, just gifted individuals with exceptional insight were chosen by God to write the Bible.;
INERRANCY
the original writings of the Bible are completely truthful and do not contain any falsehoods.
Canon
“measuring rod” books that meet the divine standard.
why were books canonized
-Authoritative - (recognized, not invested or made)
-Prophetic/Apostolic - (who wrote it)
-Orthodox - (Passing down of the faith)
-Dynamic - (Does it produce spiritual fruit?)
-Received by God’s people.
BIBLIOLOGY
DOCTRINE OF THE WORD OF
GOD
Authority
All the words in Scripture are
God’s words; to disbelieve or disobey any word
of Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God.
CLARITY
the Bible is written in
such a way that it is able to be understood, but right
understanding requires time, effort, the use of ordinary
means, a willingness to obey, and the help of the Holy Spirit;
Necessity
The Bible is necessary for
knowledge of the Gospel,
Universalism:
All people who ever lived will be saved (because God
loves everyone and won’t judge anyone).
Religious pluralism:
All sincere religious people from all religions
will be saved (because all paths lead to the same God).
Inclusivism:
People can only be saved through the redemption of
Christ but all people who ever lived will be saved, because after
people die they will find out that they were saved by Jesus’ work.
(They were “included” even if they never heard of Him or believed in Him).
Annihilationism:
People who have not believed in Christ will not be
saved, but after they die that will not be punished (or not for long)
because they will be annihilated.
Postmortem Evangelism:
After unbelievers die, they will be given
another opportunity (or a first opportunity) to trust in Christ, and
most or all of them will be saved this way.
Exclusivism:
Only those who have heard of Christ and trusted in
Him will be saved.
Sufficiency
Scripture contained all the
words of God he intended his people to have at
each stage of redemptive history, and that it now
contains everything we need God to tell us for
salvation, for trusting him, and for obeying him.
