What is the RA role in wheelchair transporting
- ensure client is decently clothed or draped
- adjust medical equipment to ensure nothing gets tangled in wheels
- may or may not need seatbelt depending on client
- endure cushion is properly in place, foot rests are on and limbs are protected
Define transfer
Safe movement of a person from one surface or location to another or from one position to another
What are the goals of transfer training?
- promote mobility and independence and permit clients to function in different environments
- encourage generalizability of skills
- increase strength, ROM, and function
- minimize skin breakdown
Define transport
Moving a client from one area to another typically using a wheelchair or a stretcher
What is the goal of most transfers
Maximize function and minimize impairments of clients. Transfers are considered therapeutic, not just a method of getting a client from a to b
What is the role of the RA in transfers?
Carry out transfers in safe, appropriate manner minimizing possible injury to yourself or client as directed by your supervising therapist
What is stand by assistance
Verbal cueing, no contact necessary, problem solving
What is close guarding assistance
Not touching the client but being close enough that if they need you, you’re right there
What is contact guarding
Holding client on transfer belt
What is a minimal assist
The client does greater than 75%
What is moderate assist
Client does 50-75%
What is maximal assist
Client does less than 25%
What is mechanical assist
Client does 0%
Three types of assistance
Verbal cueing, balance control, physical assistance
What is an independent transfer
A client consistently performs all aspects of the transfer, including set-up, in a safe manner and without assistance
