Unit 5 Flashcards
Define solvent
Able to to dissolve substances.
Define solute
The minor component (smaller amount) in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.
Define solubility
Referring to the ability for a given substances, the solute,to dissolve in a solvent.
Name 3 things the can increase the rate of solubility
- increase temperature
- small partials (crushed tablet compared to whole tablet)
- stirring the solution
If you have 80 milliliters of vinegar and you add 20 milliliters of water. In this solution, the water is identified as what part of the the solution?
The water would be because it is the smaller amount
Is the process of dissolving a solute in a solvent a chemical reaction or a physical reaction? Explain why?
Physical change because the parts never chemical combined
Why is what’re described as the universal solvent?
The unequal sharing of electrons between oxygen and hydrogen
Explain what happens to solubility when you increase the temperature.
As you increase the temperature the solubility increases
Why is water described as the polar substance?
- a positive end and a negative end
- positive charge
What most impacts weather a substance will dissolve in water?
Polarity (If it’s polar it will dissolve,if non polar will not dissolve)
What is a pH level?
Is a measure of how acidic or basic a substance is.
Give characteristics of an acid
- acids tastes sour
- acids reacts more strongly with metals
- pH level of 0-6
When you combine an acid and base what happens (example: anti acids and HCI)
Acids mixed with bases neutralize each other
What is a neutral solutions pH
pH of 7
A liquid with the pH of 3.0 is how many times. Ore acidic than one with a pH of 4.0
Ten time
