Unit 5 Flashcards
Solvent
Able to dissolve other substances.
Solute
The minor component (smaller amount) in a solution, dissolved, in the solvent.
Solubility
Referring to the ability for a given substance, the solute, to dissolve in solvent.
3 things that can increase the rate of Solubility
- increase temperature
- smaller particles (crush tablet compared to whole tablet)
- stirring the solution
If you have 80 millimeters of water. In this solution, the water is identified as what part of the solution?
The water would be the solute because it is the smaller amount
Is the process of dissolving a solute in a solvent a chemical reaction or a physical reaction? Explain why.
Physical change because the parts never chemical combine.
Why is water describes as the universal solvent?
The unequal sharing of electrons between oxygen and hydrogen
