Unit 5 Flashcards
Name a characteristic for a base.
Bitter taste, slippery to the touch, ph levels 8-14
What is acid rain.
Rain or any precipitation that is unusually acidic with levels of hydrogen ions
Give a characteristic of an acid
Taste sour, ph level 0-6, corrosive towards metals.
Acid rain main cause?
Nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide
Neutral solution is what ph? Give an example.
7, pure water
What is a solute?
A substance that is being dissolved.
What is a solvent?
A substance that is dissolving the solute depending on how much there is.
What impacts the most on weather a substance dissolves in water?
Polarity (polar substances dissolve in water, non polar don’t)
Is it a physical or chemical change when a solute dissolves a solvent?
Physical, they don’t bond chemically.
As you increase temperature, what happens to solubility?
It increases
What 3 things can increase the rate of solubility.
Increase temperature, smaller particles, stirring the solution
What happens when you combine a acid with a base?
They both neutralize each other
