Unit 5 Flashcards
Why are the prophecies of the coming messiah/christ significant to our study of salvation?
It verifies that Jesus’ claims of being the Christ are true through His works. EMMANUEL
Why are the genealogies of Christ important?
Verifies He is of the line of David
What is guaranteed by the virgin birth/why is it an essential part of the plan?
It gurantees that no human sin is passed into Jesus because there is no human conception of Jesus.
Why did Jesus have to be fully man?
Man must pay for what man has done wrong.
What would be the fallout if Jesus was not man?
There would be no atonement on the cross.
What is the importance of Christ’s deity?
His sacrifice would have eternal value
What is the hypostatic union?
It is the combination of divine and human nature in Jesus Christ, making Him fully God and fully man.
What is the result of the hypostatic union?
The theanthropic person
Why are both natures of Christ necessary for redemption?
Man must pay for man, and God fulfills His law eternally.
How does God become man? Did He empty Himself of His deity?
Kenosis (subtraction by addition). He limited His diety but didn’t empty Himself of it.
Why are the works of Jesus important to Christology? Why did Jesus have a ministry?
They are important because they attest to Jesus’ deity and Messiahship, and they also prove that His claims are true.
What are the three offices of Christ? What is their significance to the original state of humanity?
Prophet, Priest, King. They are significant because humans were supposed to fill them, but sin made us unfit for the job.
Explain the office of Priest.
A priest represents man to God. Jesus perfectly fulfills this by shielding us with His righteousness, thus presenting us as just and morally right to God the Father.
Why must Christ be a prophet, priest, and king?
As a prophet, He fully reveals the will of the Father to us. As a priest, He is that eternal sacrifice to forever cover our sins. And as a king, He comes from David and will sit on an eternal throne and subjugate His enemies and rule over them. He has to do these to be the Christ.
What happened when God forsook Jesus on the cross?
Jesus was disconnected from His sweet source of joy and strength, even to the point where God took out His wrath on Him. He was, for the first time, truly alone.
Why would the doctrine of salvation be offensive?
It basically tells us that we have a problem that we are incapable of saving ourselves from. No one likes being told they have a problem, and they certainly don’t like being told they are helpless in solving it. Implies we are EVIL.
What is accomplished by the death of Jesus on the cross?
Atonement with God.
What is accomplished by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead?
It is proof that everything He said about being the Christ is true. (think of the paralyzed man, and sins being forgiven)
Why is it good our faith has no merit?
It is good because our faith is not enough. We are failures who will never be able to step it up and do it ourselves- that is the effect of sin. So it is good that it is up to Christ because it means our unavoidable failures can not affect our relationship with Him.
What is God’s role in sanctification?
It is primarily God who works in sanctification because He sends us the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit produces holiness in us. This holiness bring us closer to being holy creatures and thus closer to God.
What is our role in sanctification?
We have active and passive roles. Our active role is to put to death the deeds of the body to make room for the holiness being produced in us by the Spirit. Our passive role is presenting ourselves as a being that has been resurrected.
How does the promise of Jesus and the Holy Spirit relate to our sanctification?
It promises that we will never be snatched away. The Spirit is within us, guranteeing our sanctification, and Jesus is the promise of eternal life.
What is justification?
Justification is the instantaneous legal act where Christ shields us with His righteousness so that God sees us as morally right and just. He also forgives our sins at this point.
What is sanctification?
Sanctification is the lifelong process (starting as soon as justification occurs) where God sends the Holy Spirit to produce holiness in us, and we work to put to death the deeds of the body.
