Unit 4.1 Flashcards
What is a homologous series?
A homologous series is a bunch of organic compounds with the same functional group and general formula.
Consecutive members of a homologous series differ by CH2.
What is the general formula for an Alkane?
CnH2n+2
What is an aromatic compound?
An aromatic compound contains a benzene ring
What is an aliphatic compound?
An aliphatic compound is a compound where the carbon atoms are joined together in straight or branched chains.
What is an alicyclic compound?
An alicyclic compound is a type of aliphatic compound where the carbon atoms are joined together in a ring structure. However it is not aromatic.
What are alkanes?
They are saturated hydrocarbons, containing c-c single bonds.
What are alkenes?
Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons, they contain a c=c double bond
What is the general formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
What is an alkyl group?
It’s a fragment of a molecule with the general formula: CnH2n+1
What is a structural isomer?
structural isomers ate connected in different ways. So although the molecular formula is the same, the structural formula is different.
