State
Political unit with a permanent population and boundaries. recognized by other states that allows for the administration of laws, collection of taxes and provision of defense

Nation
People who think of themselves as one based on a shared sense of culture in history, and who desire political autonomy
Nation-state
A state with a single nation (Japan, Iceland)
Stateless nation
A nation who does not have their own independent state
Multinational state
A state with two or more nations (most states, US, China, Russia )
Multistate nation
A state, a state divided in two, or stateless
Autonomous region
An area which governs itself, but is not an independent country
Semi-autonomous region
 an area which can govern itself in certain areas, but does not have complete power to govern
Sovereignty
The final authority of a territory, and the rate to defend territorial integrity against incursion
Self-determination
The process by which country determines its own statehood
Colonialism
Rule by an autonomous power over a subordinate people and place that creates unequal, cultural and economic relations
Imperialism
 The drive towards creation, expansion of an empire, and then once established its perpetuation
Devolution
The transfer of decision-making power from a central government to a lower level
Authoritarian government
Strong, central power, no constitutional accountability or individual freedom
Republic government
Power is in a body of citizens, entitled to vote exercise by elected representatives, responsible to them, and governing, according to law
Democracy
Power in majority
Shatter belt
Region suffering instability, or at risk of instability, because of its location between two opposing regions or powers
Balkinization
Fragmentation of the state or region into smaller often hustle units along ethnolinguistic lines

Geographical feature with strategic economic or political importance
