Which colonies are considered “New England”?
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire
Describe the geography of New England and explain how that affected their settlement.
thin, rocky soil and a short growing season, so there were few large cash-crop plantations. Most people lived an urban lifestyle.
Describe the economy of New England.
they had a sea-based economy (fishing, whaling, shipbuilding)
Who started the Massachusetts Bay Colony?
Puritan families, led by John Winthrop
Why did the Puritans leave England for Massachusetts?
they did not want to be part of the Church of England, and they wanted a society that put religion first
Why was education important to the Puritans?
they wanted everyone to be able to read the bible
Describe the Puritan lifestyle.
They were intolerant of other religions and lifestyles, and punished people they felt were not providing a Christian example.
Identify two dissenters and explain why they were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
- Roger Williams – wanted separation of church and state and better treatment of the natives
- Anne Hutchinson – led Bible studies in her home
Describe the Salem witch trials
In 1692-3, in the settlement of Salem, three young girls began falsely accusing people of being witches. These people were put on trial, and 20 were executed.
Why did the Puritans feel entitled to the land?
because they were Christian and the natives were “pagan”
Describe King Philip’s War of 1675.
Wampanoag Chief Metacom (“King Philip”) launched an attack on Plymouth settlements that were encroaching on native territory. This war wiped out the Wompanoag tribe.
What happened to the Plymouth Colony as a result of King Philip’s War?
they were financially devastated and were absorbed by the Massachusetts Bay Colony
What religious movement spread from Massachusetts?
The Great Awakening, which encouraged people to repent from their sins and become more devout
Who started the colony of Rhode Island, and why?
Roger Williams, he wanted a place of religious toleration
