He was a Commander in Chief of the Continental army and Delegate to Constitutional Convention
What is a precedent?
An example that would become a standard practice.
What is the Cabinet and who do they support?
They are departments that help and support the president.
Which cabinet member was in charge of the treasury ? Why was this such an important job?
Alexander Hamilton, he managed the governments money.
What is a strict interpretation of the Constitution? Who favored this?
Only what the constitution clearly states - favored by Jefferson and Madison
What is a loose interpretation of the constitution? Who favored this?
The constitution must be flexible to meet the needs of the country’s Elastic Cause - favored by Hamilton and Adams
What was Whiskey Rebellion?
Hamilton passed a tax on whiskey, poor farmers refused to pay for it. Washington and Hamilton send 13,000 troops to restore order but the rebels went home to avoid confrontation
How were Shays rebellion and Whiskey similar?
Both groups were protesting about taxes and were farmers.
What was Hamilton’s Financial Plan?
National gov assumes all debts (all states have to pay)
How were Shays rebellion and Whiskey different?
Whiskey has to do with one law and shays was just fed up with the leaders in Massachusetts.
Why were the southern states not thrilled about Hamilton’s plan?
They have little to no debts so it made it unfair that they had to pay for the debts of others.
What is Jay’s Treaty?
Passed to solve issues w/ England, trades more, and stays neutral btwn Eng. & Fran. War
Why did political parties form?
Because senators became rivals based on who supported who during the presidential elections of Washington or Adams
What was the main message of Washington’s farewell?
Don’t stray from your duty because of foreign entanglements or fighting.
What was the XYZ affair?
France attacked American shipping, which hurts Britain. Adams sends commissioners (Marshall, Pinckens and Gerry) to ask for peace. French minister sends xyz agents to demand huge bribe which was declined. In the end they lose each other’s alliance.

Rejected the Alien and Sedition acts

Supported Jefferson and James Madison, against Hamilton’s financial plan
