The Cuban independence movement
The Cubans were ruled unhappily by Spain, and tried to win independence. The Spanish tried to crush this movement by starting reconcentration camps.
Yellow journalism
The practice of publishing sensational and often exaggerated news in newspapers in order to attract readers and increase sales. (This practice took place often during the Spanish-American war describing atrocities committed by Spain on Cubans in reconcentration camps)
U.S.S Maine
The U.S.S Maine was out ship that sunk in Havana harbor. It is unknown whether or not Spain purposefully sunk it, but many Americans blamed them
Rough riders/ San Juan Hill
Teddy Roosevelt created his own regiment called the rough riders. They, with African American troops, from a different regiment advanced and took San Juan Hill and Santiago.
Was it difficult for the US to win the Spanish-American war
Not really, they only lost about 350 soldiers in combat and the war only lasted a couple months. It was even called” a splendid little war”

They felt betrayed and fought the American soldiers for 3 years after
Why did Teddy Roosevelt want to build the Panama Canal?
He wanted to make the u.s a great power that could influence the world. A canal would do this. Also, the US could move ships easier throughout newly gained territories.
Why was it difficult for the US to build the Panama Canal?
Geography- through mountains
Climate- it rained a lot
Disease- tropical diseases
