Unit 4 test Flashcards
Foot
Muscle; function varies
Radula
toothy tongue
Poly
Placo
Phora
Poly - many
Placo - plates
Phora - Carrier
Chitons
8 shells on dorsal side. And the shell surrounded by the mantle. They eat algae off rocks
Gastropoda - meaning of name
Gastro - stomach
Poda - foot
Class members - snails, sea slugs
Herbivore (Gastropoda)
Eats algae or benthic diatoms
Carnivore (Gastropoda)
Eats other mollusks, sea urchins, fish, barnacle, worms, sponges, sea anemones
Deposit feeder (Gastropoda) Scavenger
Deposit Feeders - Eat organic material such as minerals deposited on the sea floor.
Scavengers - eat larger particles.
Filter feeder (Gastropoda)
Pump water over their gills and feed off of the free floating algae, filtering the water.
Nudibranchs
Gastropoda that lack a shell. Usually are colored and have bizarre shapes. The more surface are they have, the more gas exchange, by using the Cerata.
They feed on Cnidarians and keep the nematocysts for their own use by putting them in their tips of the cerata.
Bivalvia
meaning of class names: Bi = two, Valva = door
Class members - mussels, oysters, clams, scallops
Characteristics - 2 shells, no radula, siphons for feeding.
They are found on soft to hard surfaces.
The bissus allows mussels to stick to hard surfaces. The byssal allows oysters to burrow and run away.
Scallops lie in the sand or mud and use jet propulsion.
Open circulatory system - heart pumps blood through open spaces called sinuses instead of blood vessels.
Nervous system of Bivalves are reduced because they have no head.
Nervous System
Nervous system of Bivalves are reduced because they have no head.
Gastropods - fairly basic
Cephalopods - very well developed. And have good vision, small ganglia near mouth, balance, simple chemical and touch receptors. Good dexterity and memory.
Musculoskeletal system
Bivalves - two shells, foot pulls animal forward and can retract for protection.
Gastropods - have a stomach foot which they use to slide forward.
Cephalopods - have a foot that has been modified into many tentacles with suction cups.
Reproductive system for mollusks
Separate sexes. External fertilization. Internal fertilization. Present in cephalopods and gastropod.
