Q

What are some advantages and disadvantages of mass/solid structures?

A

ADVANTAGE: stays together, solid, strong, holds down own mass, removing a section will not ruin it.
DISADVANTAGE: Can’t be transported, it could contract/expand, very heavy, hard to build, ground could buckle underneath.

12
Q

What are some advantages and disadvantages of Frame structures.

A

ADVANTAGES: strong, inexpensive, supports other parts, is the important part for aesthetic structure.
DISADVANTAGES: tall frames are unstable, one missing piece can affect strength, needs to be anchored, hard to make.

Q

What are some advantages and disadvantages of shell structures?

A

ADVANTAGE: strong, hollow, make use of efficient shape, light, no support required, little.
DISADVANTAGE: Natural disaster, harder to build, tiny weakness can cause structural failure.

17
Q

Define function.

A

what the structure, will be used for.

18
Q

What is the purpose of function?

A

Function is the FIRST THING you must consider when designing.

19
Q

Define Aesthetic.

A

The beauty of an object what makes things aesthetically pleasing.

20
Q

What does Aesthetic show?

A
  • symmetrical shapes
  • method of construction
  • interesting texture/colour
  • shapes that are repeated/carefully arranged
21
Q

Why do structures vary in design?

A

culture, traditions, economics, climate, technology, availability of materials, portability.

22
Q

What is the Margin of Safety?

A

The limits in which a structure is expected to perform its function SAFELY.

23
Q

What is an example of margin of safety?

A

speed limits, load requirements.

24
Q

What are the environmental factors? (2)

A

1) Climate change

2) Terrain conditions

25
Q

What is some example of climate/temperature. (give more than 3 of them.)

A
  • snow -permafrost -humidity

- heavy rain -intense winds

26
Q

what is some examples of terrain conditions. (give more than 1 )

A
  • earthquakes

- unstable soil
