Coriolis Effect
A phenomenon that causes fluids, like water and air to curve as they travel across or above Earth’s surface.
Ecliptic plane
Plane of Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
Solstice
Period when the Sun is overhead at its farthest distance either north or south of the equator.
Equinox
Time of year during which Earth’s axis is at a 90 degree angle to the sun
Waxing
From new moon to full moon
Waning
From full moon to new moon
Synchronous Rotation
The state at which the moons orbital and rotational periods are equal.
Lunar month
The length of time it takes for the moon to go through a complete cycle of phase one new moon to the next.
Spring tide
Occur 2 each lunar year long, without regard to the season.
Neap tide
Occur during the 1st and 3rd quarter moon when the moon appears “half full” are a little lower and low tides a higher.
Solar Eclipse
Occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and earth and blocks the sun from view.
Umbra
The inner, cone-shaped portion of the shadow, which blocks the direct sunlight from Earth.
Penumbra
The outer portion of the shadow, where some of the sun’s light still reaches earth.
Lunar eclipse
Occurs when the moon passes the through earths shadow
Foucault Pendulum
The rotation of the Earth
