Unit 4 Review Flashcards
How do you carry out a Simple Random Sample?
Assign each item a number, use a random number generator to find which ones to choose according to number of items needed.
What are the advantages of Simple Random Sample?
Avoids bias, easy and cheap, each item has equal chance
What are the disadvantages of Simple Random Sample?
Not suitable for large population size, sampling frame needed
How do you carry out a systematic sample?
Assign each item a number and choose 1 item every desired interval.
What are the advantages of a systematic sample?
Simple and quick, suitable for large samples/populations
What are the disadvantages of a systematic sample?
Sampling frame needed, can introduce bias if sampling frame isn’t random
How do you carry out a stratified sample?
Divide population into groups based on sample needed, carry out a simple random sample within the groups. Sample an even distribution of people per group based on group size
What are the advantages of a stratified sample?
Reflects the population structure, guarantees representation for each group
What are the disadvantages of a stratified sample?
Population must be categorized into groups (strata), same disadvantages as random sampling
How do you carry out a quota sample?
Divide population into strata/groups, quota of people set beforehand introduced into population, interviewer selects sampling units
What are the advantages of a quota sample?
Small sample size still represented, quick/easy, no sample frame needed
What are the disadvantages of a quota sample?
Can introduce bias, can be costly/time consuming at a larger scale
How do you carry out a convenience sample?
Take sample from people who are available at the time of the survey and fit the criteria
What are the advantages of a convenience sample?
Easy to carry out, inexpensive
What are the disadvantages of a convenience sample?
Unlikely to provide a representative sample, highly dependent on individual researcher
