Unit 4 Quiz 3 Vocab Flashcards
Electron Transport Chain
A series of four protein complexes that couple redox reactions, creating an electrochemical gradient that leads to the creation of ATP in a complete system named oxidative phosphorylation.
Alcoholic Fermentation
A process in which some sugars (as glucose) are converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide
Lactic Acid Fermentation
A type of anaerobic respiration (or fermentation) that breaks down sugars to produce energy in the form of ATP
Mitochondrion
An organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur
Anaerobic
Relating to, involving, or requiring an absence of free oxygen.
Aerobic
Relating to, involving, or requiring free oxygen.
Glycolysis
The breakdown of glucose by enzymes, releasing energy and pyruvic acid.
Krebs Cycle
The sequence of reactions by which most living cells generate energy during the process of aerobic respiration. It takes place in the mitochondria, consuming oxygen, producing carbon dioxide and water as waste products, and converting ADP to energy-rich ATP.
