A priest who incited the partaking of the crusades and went on the first one

He was the first Muslim caliph following the death of Muhammad, and and expanded the Sassanid Empire.
Pipe Urban II
Pope of Western Christianity, who began the first Crusades.
Saladin
Sunni Muslims sprung from his controversy, and was a sultan rather than a caliph.
Muhammad
He was the founder of Islam, and he united Arabia under Islam.
Louis IX
He was the king of France, who was influenced heavily by the Church. He had anti-Semitic politics.
Justinian I
He was the emperor of Byzantium, and engaged in the reconquering of what was once all of Rome.
The Great Schism
It split Christianity in two, between Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox.
Sunni vs. Shia
A split in Islam between supporters of Muhammad’s lineage as caliphs and supporters of whoever was deemed worthy.
Byzantium
The eastern half of the Roman Empire after its fall; the main patron of Eastern Orthodoxy.
Caliph & Caliphate
A caliphate is the Islamic form of government, and a Caliph is the ruler of it.
Frankish people and the Holy Roman Empire.
Frankish people are the native ancient people of France, united under Charlemagne. Charlemagne’s lineage became the Holy Roman Empire.
Abbasid Caliphate
Followed the Umayyad Caliphate, and was the “golden age” of the caliphs.
Umayyad Caliphate.
This caliphate followed the death of Ali, and was the last “righteously guided” caliph.
