Population
The total number of people inhabiting a specified area
Demographics
The quantifiable statistics of a given population. They are also used to identify the study of quantifiable subsets within a given population which characterize that population at a specific point in time
Demographer
One who studies the characteristics of human populations, such as size, growth, density, distribution, and vital statistics
Migration
Movement of people
Immigrants
People that move into a country
Emigrants
People who leave a country to live elsewhere
Population Density
The average number of people in a square mile or square kilometer
Birthrate
The number of live births each year per 1,000 people
Death Rate
The number of deaths yearly per 1,000 people in a population
Push Factors
Reasons why people leave a country. (For example: bad governments, poor economy, persecution)
Pull Factors
Reasons why people are encouraged to move to a new place. (For example: job opportunities, individual rights)
Population Pyramid
A bar graph representing the distribution of population by age and sex
Cartogram
A presentation of statistical data in geographical distribution on a map
Demographic transition model
Diagram which shows the relationship between birth and death rates and how changes in these affect the total population
Population distribution
Where people live in a country, whether crowded in cities or spread across the countryside.
