Unit 4 Polymers Flashcards
Benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid and Ethane-1,2-diol react to form which polymer?
Terylene (PET)
What are the two methods of polymerisation?
Addition and condensation
Benzene-1,4-diamine and Benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid react to form which polymer?
Kevlar
Hexane-1,6-dioic acid and 1,6-diaminohexane react to form which polymer?
Nylon-6,6
Which polymer is this?
Kevlar
Under suitable conditions molecules of HOCH3CH2COOH can react with each other to form a polymer through which type of polymerisation?
Condensation
This structure represents which polymer?
Nylon-6,6
This reaction forms which polymer?
Terylene
What happens in addition polymerisation?
Small alkenes react as monomers.
Why are addition polymers weak?
The many chains are only held together by weak Van de Waals forces and they are non polar so are easily seporated. They are also chemically inert so will not biodegrade.
What happens in condensation polymerisation?
Monomers join through an amide or ester link with the loss of a simple molecule, e.g. water.
Why are polyesters/polyamides strong?
They have hydrogen bonds between their chains and can be polar so lots of energy is required to overcome the forces.
Why are addition polymers biodegradable?
They can be hydrolysed.
What are the uses of Kevlar?
Tyres, sails and body armor due to its high sterngth to weight ratio. Its also used for modern drum heads that have to withstand high impact.
What are the uuses of Nylon-6,6
Used for framed wepons, ball baring cages, electronic insulating elements, pipes, various machine parts, carpet fibres, airbags, tyres, zip ties, ropes, conveyor belts, hoses and the outer layer of blankets. It is also used for guitar nuts.
