What is a symbol?
A symbol is a picture or an item that stands for something else or has a special meaning.
What is the Coat of Arms?
The Coat of Arms is like a country’s badge.
What is the Coat of Arms used for in SA?
It is used to stamp official South African items, eg. birth certificates or identity documents. It also appears on buildings, and SAfrican coins too. It show that the items are officially SAfrican.
What is the SAfrican flag?
A symbol for SA.
What do the different colours mean on the SA flag?
Different things to different people.
What is the colour red mean on the SA flag?
Blood
What is the colour blue mean on the SA flag?
Open, blue sky
What is the colour green mean on the SA flag?
The land
What is the colour black mean on the SA flag?
Black people
What is the colour white mean on the SA flag?
White people
What is the colour yellow mean on the SA flag?
The gold found in the country
What were yellow, black and green often used as?
They were used in flags by groups that opposed to the Apartheid government, eg. the ANC and the PAC
What were red, white and blue often used as?
They were colours that were used in the previous SA flags.
What does the V on the flag mean?
The coming together of different people who were separated.
What is a national anthem?
A national anthem is the official song of a country, usually sung at important events to show respect to a country.
