Unit 4 - Matter and Energy Exchange Flashcards
Manipulated Variable
the variable that is being tested
when graphed: x axis
Responding Variable
the results
when graphing: y axis
Controlled Variable
factors that need to stay the same.
e.g age, sex, length of time
Ocular lens
look through to see object under the microscope.
- Usually 10x magnification.
Body Tube
Connects the ocular to the microscope.
Arm
Connects the base and the barrel.
Revolving nosepiece
Turns to change the objective lens to use.
Stage Clip
Holds the slide in place
Objective lenses
Used to view objects at three different magnifications.
- 4x, 10x, 40x
Adjustment knob
Moves the stage side-to-side, or forward and back to get the object into the field of view.
Slide
Piece of glass onto which the object to be viewed is placed.
Stage
Holds up the slide for viewing.
Coarse adjustment knob
Raises and lowers the stage for focusing under LOW power only.
Iris diaphragm
Adjusts the amount of light entering the field of view.
Fine adjustment knob
Slightly moves the stage to sharpen the image.
Base
Supports the microscope.
What is a Transmission Electron Microscope?
- 2D images
- can view structures inside the cell
- black and white
- beam of electrons used instead of light
What is a Scanning Electron Microscope?
- images appear 3D
- black and white
- scans surface of cell
- beam of electrons instead of light source
- specimen must be dead
Light Microscope
- 2D
- can view colours
- what we commonly use in our labs
- live specimen
Eukaryotic
Complex-called organisms.
e.g: animal cells, plant cells
Prokaryotic
simple-felled organisms
e.g: bacteria
