East Texans were furious about having to leave their homes. Their leader Gil’Y Barbo asked to stay but the governor said no. So, he led the people back into east Texas without permission. In 1719, Nacogdoches was founded.

A

After Napoleon took back Louisiana, the U.S. purchased this territory for 15 million dollars. This means that the U.S. land doubled and the U.S. now shared a border with Texas.

Neutral Ground Agreement

A

The U.S. and Spain disagreed on the border between Texas and Louisiana. The U.S. thought the border was the Sabine River and Spain thought the border was Arroyo Hondo. So, the area between the two proposed borders was known as neutral ground.

A

Gutierrez traveled to the U.S. in 1811 to fight for Texan independence. He met Augustus Magee whom he created the Republican Army of the North. The army was successful in capturing multiple settlements.

A

The Battle of Medina was the bloodiest battle in Texas history where the Army of the North lost to the Spanish. The Spanish army was commanded by General Arredondo.

The Long Expedition

A

This group declared Texas independent from Spain and declared Dr. James Long as its president. After a few battles, Long and his men were captured and taken to prison. There, Long died 6 months later and a gunshot. He was the last filibuster in Texas.

A

Stephen F. Austin (The Father of Texas) was first empresario and the Spanish sent Erasmo Seguin to help with his settlement. He chose the area between the Brazos and Colorado rivers and his main city was San Felipe de Austin. This area had access to rich soil, water. and good weather.
